ABOUT STANHOPES

Looking after a Stanhope

With proper care, a Stanhope has the potential to last a very long time. In fact, many nineteenth-century Stanhopes can still be found in good working order today. Here are four of our recommendations to keep your Stanhope in good condition for years to come.

1

Avoid water

Prolonged or repeated exposure to water could damage the photographic film used to make the hidden photo. We strongly recommend that you take off your Stanhope jewellery before showering, bathing or swimming.

2

Avoid harsh
chemicals

We recommend removing your Stanhope jewellery when doing housework: the chemicals in many cleaning products may affect the jewellery’s metalwork.

3

Use the supplied
cloth to keep the glass clean

Dust and grease on the external surfaces of the Stanhope lens can obscure the hidden photo. Clean the glass by wiping gently with the microfibre polishing cloth provided. Avoid using paper towels or tissues as these may scratch the lens. The cloth is also useful for removing fingerprints and tarnish from the metalwork.

4

Store your Stanhope somewhere
dark and dry

Prolonged exposure to UV light will eventually distort the hidden photo, as will excessive humidity. We recommend keeping your Stanhope somewhere dry and out of direct sunlight when it’s not being worn.
